Framework II: Canada’s Screen-based Workforce  Frame Work II-Canada's Screen based Workforce cover Framework II: Canada’s Screen-based Workforcexls was undertaken by Women in Film and Television-Toronto to update their previous 2004 research in the area of the participation of women, Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minority groups in Canada’s screen-based workforce. The study finds that although there has been some progress in the representation of most designated groups in screen-based industries, such progress does not always keep pace with the progress made in Canada’s overall workforce. Trends in the film and television production and distribution, broadcasting, and interactive digital media industries are examined. January 27, 2012.

Monetizing Music File Sharing: A New B2B Modelxls was undertaken by the Songwriters’ Association of Canada (SAC) to propose a Canadian model for the monetization of music file sharing. A survey of Canadians’ music consumption habits revealed that a majority of those surveyed would be willing to pay an additional license fee on their Internet bill in order to legally music file share. The SAC proposes that music creators and rights holders should form a partnership with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in order to legitimize and license music file sharing in Canada and collect revenue from this activity. Digital Distribution Report: The Performance of Documentaries on Digital Services in Canada  DOC Digital Distribution Report cover  The Digital Distribution Reportxls was undertaken by the Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC) to provide an environmental scan of Canada’s digital distribution services and how Canadian documentaries are performing on those platforms. The report provides statistics on how Canadian documentaries perform on several broadcaster web portals, iTunes, and on National Film Board’s (NFB) online platforms. The study points out that the creation of benchmarks and indices for the performance of documentaries on digital platforms is a key first step if the industry is to exploit this market. The study outlines the combination of new technologies and emerging consumer behaviors that are leading to changes in business models, distribution patterns and consumption patterns for professionally produced video content. In particular the study highlights the impact that online competition from OTTs will have on traditional broadcasters and outlines the near-term threats posed by market disruptors. July 5, 2011.

The study examines the first available data on Internet TV viewers in Canada and presents an analysis of how OTT services may impact upon traditional broadcast audiences for Canadian programming in the coming years. July 5, 2011.

The study provides a snapshot of unregulated foreign OTT services in Canada, with a particular focus on Netflix Canada, and argues that in a very short period of time they have become a major disruptive force within the Canadian broadcasting system. Recommendations include promoting the industry on the basis of quality and developing world class infrastructure. July 4, 2011. 
gaminginc: Toronto Gaming Incubator Feasibility Study  gaminginc  gaminginc: Toronto Gaming Incubator Feasibility Study xls was undertaken by the Centre for Arts & Design at George Brown College to survey the current space and resources needs of Toronto’s small and medium game design companies to determine if a collaborative incubator approach is a viable means of addressing the needs of the digital media industry. The study concludes that a Toronto gaming incubator is necessary and feasible. The study recommends a hybrid incubator model as the best means to maximize long-term stability and support. June 29, 2011 
Analysis of the Impact of the Ontario Sound Recording Tax Credit  OSRTC Impact Analysis Cover  The Analysis of the Impact of the Ontario Sound Recording Tax Credit (OSRTC) xls study was undertaken by the Canadian Independent Music Association to document the contribution the OSRTC makes to the Ontario economy, assess its role in developing Ontario’s independent music industry, and examine ways of potentially improving the credit’s impact. The study shows that the economic impact of the OSRTC reaches well beyond the production and marketing expenditures it supports and identifies possible options for improving the OSRTC. May 13, 2011
eLearning Industry Snapshot 2010 eLearning in Ontario Final report-March 23 11  eLearning Industry Snapshot 2010xls was undertaken by Interactive Ontario to provide a statistical profile of eLearning companies operating in Ontario. eLearning activity includes projects such as curriculum-based learning, casual learning, corporate training as well as medical and military simulations. The study collected data from 130 eLearning firms, and gives information on industry size, the composition of projects and industry strengths and challenges. April 15, 2011. 
Getting Real 4: An Economic Profile of the Canadian Documentary Production Industry  Getting Real 4-April 6 2011  Getting Real Volume 4xls was undertaken by the Documentary Organization of Canada to provide an updated profile of the documentary production industry in Canada. This update, the fourth in this series of profiles, shows that documentary production volume and employment have declined since 2007 when the last data was collected. Despite these challenges, new content platforms and technological advances are providing opportunities for documentary production in Canada to grow.   April 7, 2011.

The submission addressed all areas put forward in the Department’s consultation document with specific focus on certain elements of the model treaty, including proportionality, key positions, location and technical services and distribution requirements. The Red Oasis: A Report on Canadian Films in Canadian Schools The Red Oasis Cover  The Red Oasis: A Report on Canadian Films in Canadian Schoolsxls was undertaken by REEL CANADA in partnership with the Canadian Association of Film Distributors and Exporters (CAFDE) to examine the penetration of Canadian films into Canadian schools. The study finds that although there is an appetite for Canadian films in Canadian schools, barriers exist to their acquisition, and makes a recommendation to address these barriers.  March 9, 2011.

Study of Canadian Feature Film Sales to Canadian TV Broadcasters  Canadian Feature Film Sales  Study of Canadian Feature Film Sales to Canadian TV Broadcastersxls was undertaken by the Canadian Association of Film Distributors and Exporters (CAFDE) and the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) to provide detailed television revenues for theatrically released Canadian feature films from 2000-2009, from both English and French language broadcasters. The study finds that after an initial increase, sales have declined steadily in the latter years of the decade. March 2, 2011

The Working Capital Publishing Stabilization Program OBPO Publishing-Stabilization Cover Working Capital Publishing Stabilization Programxls is a strategic plan created by the Organization of Book Publishers of Ontario (OBPO), with the assistance of Craig Riggs of Turner-Riggs Workspace and a publishing industry steering committee, to create a pilot working capital stabilization program for Canadian-owned book publishers. The plan outlines the strategic concept and plan for a program that would assist publishers by allowing them to access a pool of working capital, in order to grow their businesses. October 21, 2010.

Economic Activity Associated with the 2008-09 Operations of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) pdf was prepared by TCI Management Consultants and Cormex Research, for TIFF to look at the economic impact of TIFF’s activities for a full year from August 2008 to August 2009. Impacts associated with the construction of Bell Lightbox, the value of media impressions and volunteer activity are included in this measurement. Funding partners for this study include OMDC and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

Towards a Framework for Digital Rights CFTPA Digital Rights Study cover Towards a Framework for Digital Rightspdf was undertaken by the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) who commissioned Duopoly Research to explore the evolving marketplace for the digital rights associated with film and television content in Canada. This study builds a framework that defines a common lexicon of terms around digital rights, describes the dynamic nature of the windows of exhibition for video content, and identifies areas of confusion or misunderstanding in the Canadian production industry with respect to digital rights. OMDC was the primary funder of this study, with additional funding contributions by a number of key production industry funders, including the Association of Provincial Film Funding Agencies, the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund, the Canada Media Fund, the National Film Board and the Shaw Rocket Fund.

The Information Sources Studyxls is the fourth iteration of a study of information sources by the Canadian Business Press, the trade organization for the business-to-business magazine industry in Canada. Starch Research surveyed the purchasing decision-makers in various industries, including manufacturing, automotive and agriculture, to determine the role the business press plays in the communication of business information. As in previous versions of the study, business publications ranked very highly in terms of usefulness, coming in second only to the Internet.

Improving access to capital will assist companies in remaining competitive on the international stage. This report examines the need for new financing vehicles and examines a number of potential funding mechanisms. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages associated with each of the tools and concludes by indicating which tools could be used to further a series of possible policy objectives.

The consultant looked at a variety of other jurisdictions as well as several arts and cultural funding organizations. The study determined that there is no clear rationale for the allocation of public funding, whether in arts and culture or in other sectors.
